Lusaka, Zambia It's over, over In the words of the ubiquitous hit song of 2007 by Jimmy, the Zambian popstrel: "It’s over, over, tiza onana baby". I finished my placement with Computers for Zambian Schools a fortnight ago, and am now working for the internet service provider AfriConnect, managing a project to get internet connectivity into schools and rural districts. Despite sharing an open-plan office with 15 other people it is so nice working without gospel music blaring away, the roof doesn't leak and there are no rats. And there's even a kettle, and a toilet and everything!
I will miss my CFZS colleagues a lot, but will still be working closely with them; they have even asked me to join the board of trustees. The past 12 months have been enlightening and rewarding, and the experience has made me appreciate so much the opportunities I have had in the UK, my education, friends and my family – all of which it is too easy to take for granted. I have also learned to be more patient and I don't "sweat the small stuff" as much as I used to (well my colleagues might say this still needs more work but I have improved, honestly!).
Part of me wishes I had done the VSO thing ten years ago, but Africa would have been a very different place back then, I would have been much so more cut off. I do wonder how I would have coped if I had been posted to a more remote placement, away from the capital city and the ex-pat comforts – this would have really tested how flexible and adaptable I am in difficult circumstances.
I guess this entry is the end of my blog and I do hope you have enjoyed reading it. Please keep in touch via the wonders of email and Skype; I don't want you to forget who I am! I am hoping to get back to Blighty in July so I look forward to catching up with a lot of you then.
